Superintendent’s Message

Greetings:

As summer vacation winds down and students head back to school, I often reflect on the classic paintings of Norman Rockwell and his idyllic images of school. Rockwell’s paintings evoke nostalgic feelings that I experienced as a first year teacher in 1974, but my realistic side knows full-well that the schools Rockwell painted cannot exist in the 21st century and meet the educational needs of all students. However, the core values of the schools that Rockwell painted – a love of learning, caring teachers, student camaraderie, and life-long learning – still exist, and must exist in 21st century schools.

Schools have changed and will continue to change to meet the changing needs of students – both young and old. Some people claim that schools more resemble a Picasso than a Rockwell. No matter the artist, schools are still a vital component of a democratic society. In a changing society, adult education assumes an even greater role as adults return to school to learn new skills, refine existing skills, seek new employment, develop personal learning, or just have fun.

As superintendent, I am extremely proud of the exceptional programs that Castro Valley Adult and Career Education offer the life-long learner. The program has not been immune to the state budget cuts, but Castro Valley continues to offer a vibrant and extensive range of programs for every learner.

Take a moment or two to browse through this brochure. You will see the variety of courses and you will probably find at least one of interest to you. I look forward to seeing you in one of our classes this fall.

Sincerely,

Jim Negri, Superintendent
