Jerry Green, DirectorDirector’s Message

Addressing the Highest Priority: In spite of budget cuts and reduced course offerings in certain areas, Castro Valley Adult and Career Education is expanding instructional hours for the high school diploma, concurrent credit recovery, and career and technical education programs in order to address the needs of the unemployed and underemployed members of our community. Some fees for ongoing courses have been adjusted slightly to compensate for this growth, but most fees remain the same as they were during fall quarter.

Financial Assistance Needed: In response to inquiries from community members, and in order to help address budget shortfalls, we have established a process for community members to donate directly to either our Student Scholarship Fund or to a Designated Subject Area Program of the donator’s choosing. All Scholarship Funds will go directly to reducing the course registration fees for students with financial needs (students apply through the Main Office). Subject Area donations will be used to maintain or expand the specific program area designated by the contributor - Adults with Disabilities or Career and Technical Training for example.

Contributions can be made via our website at www.cvadult.org or through our Main Office. Office staff will ask that checks be made out to Castro Valley Adult and Career Education with a note on the bottom of the check specifying either “Scholarship Fund” or the Designated Program Area of your choosing. Each donation will be acknowledged by Castro Valley Adult and Career Education (a non-profit organization) with a letter from the Director, a Donation Memo to the Board of Education, and recognition in our next quarterly brochure. Thank you for considering a contribution to either the Scholarship Fund or the Designated Subject Area Fund.

As always, wishing you joy in your pursuit of life-long learning.
Jerry Green

Did You Know...
Castro Valley has some of the best schools in the state!

Awards our schools have received:
• California Distinguished Schools
• All but one with API scores of over 800; four over 900
• California “Schools to Watch – Taking Center Stage”
• State Academic Achievement Award – Title 1 School
• Presidential Award-winning teacher

Maintaining this excellence will necessitate community involvement going forward:
• California ranks 47th in US for state funding per student – $2,000 less than US average
• California student-teacher ratios among the highest in US
• $4.1 million in CVUSD cuts for 2009-2010: reading specialists, 9th grade class
sizes, seventh period (CVHS), athletics, librarians, music, counselors, custodians, and
transportation.
• The CVUSD expects another $3.1 million revenue shortfall NEXT YEAR... more
programs will be at risk

We Can Maintain Excellence .... Just $1 per day per student will raise over $3 million!
• We value class sizes, academic excellence and extra-curricular programs.
• SOSCV! benefits all schools. Budgeting is done at the district level, limiting the ability
of school PTAs and program-specific foundations to address issues such as class sizes and
teacher/staff positions.

The time to act is NOW. Funds need to be raised by March 2010 to meet the next budget
cycle. In order to raise our goal of $3.2 million in funds every student in the district
must be sponsored at $1 per day or $365 per year. Donate or volunteer today! For further
information, see www.soscv.org or e-mail info@soscv.org.

All donations are100% tax deductible (federal tax ID#26-4525350).
