I am excited to announce the addition of three new Career Training courses: Clinical Medical Assistant, Pharmacology, and Math Skills for Work Success.

Clinical Medical Assistant Back Office is a comprehensive training program to prepare students for employment in a growing and demanding area of healthcare. During the 260 hours of classroom instruction students will learn back office procedures including taking vital signs, preparing and administering injections, drawing blood, collecting specimens, taking electrocardiograms, recording and charting patient history, preparing patients for x-rays and examinations, applying bandages and dressings, as well as other treatments and procedures commonly performed by a CMA. Successful students will be offered an opportunity to enroll in an optional clinical externship program.

Pharmacology has been added to our medical program for two reasons. First, to enable our medical students and medical industry employees to extend their knowledge base. Second, because Pharmacology is one of the pre-requisites needed for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA’s) to take the state examination to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). The 63 hours of instruction will include body systems, classes of medications, therapeutic actions and adverse reaction, as well as instruction on dosage calculations.

Math Skills for Work Success is a new series designed to strengthen students’ math skills and confidence. This series starts off with a review of basic calculations and progresses to percentages, measurements and weights, as well as other practical math skills needed for success in a variety of careers, including health care. Each workshop is an opportunity to reduce math anxieties, enhance math knowledge and increase employability options.

Our amazing career training team developed these new courses in response to requests from current students, as well as graduates, and we ask for your assistance in spreading the word about these additions to the training options offered at Castro Valley Adult and Career Education.

Wishing you joy in your pursuit of life-long learning.

Did You Know...
Castro Valley has some of the best schools in the state!

Maintaining this excellence will necessitate community involvement going forward:
• California ranks 47th in US for state funding per student – $2,000 less than US average
• California student-teacher ratios among the highest in US
• $4.1 million in CVUSD cuts for 2009-2010: reading specialists, 9th grade class sizes, seventh period (CVHS), athletics, librarians, music, counselors, custodians, and transportation.
• The CVUSD expects another $5.1 million revenue shortfall NEXT YEAR... more
programs will be at risk
We Can Maintain Excellence .... Just $1 per day per student will raise over $3 million!
• We value class sizes, academic excellence and extra-curricular programs.
• SOSCV! benefits all schools. Budgeting is done at the district level, limiting the ability of school PTAs and program-specific foundations to address issues such as class sizes and teacher/staff positions.
