Winter emphasis will be on the feeding behavior of birds from selection mechanisms and adaptations to digestion. Winter I.D. emphasis is to be on selected species with a wide array of habitats and types of feeding (e.g., fresh and salt water, marshes, forests, grasslands and parks). Field Trips will not only be in the East Bay, but also include the greater Bay Area to San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. Note: double hours trips may be scheduled. Directions for field trips will be announced prior to outings.

MEMORY ACADEMY I
(Health and Fitness Literacy)
Session I will educate students on the changes that normally come with age and how to adapt to them. Students will master techniques for remembering names, numbers and other things that are so easy to forget. The latest research is used to provide information for empowered aging and maintaining brain health and independence. Activities that provide challenge, novelty and variety that work all parts of the brain, like “NUMBRIX” are practiced. Because of their proven benefits to brain health, physical exercise, balance improvement and techniques for reducing the effects of stress are included in each class. Session One and Two can be taken in any order.

MEMORY ACADEMY II
(Health and Fitness Literacy)
Session II will educate students on what each part of the brain does and what keeps it strong and healthy. Each student builds their own resource binder filled with nutritional interventions to reduce the effects of aging and stress on the brain and body from respected and scholarly sources. The latest research on Alzheimers, and ways that may prevent dementia will be discussed. Mentally challenging activities, like SUDOKU, word and memory games will work all parts of the brain and the different types of memory. We will learn new techniques for improving memory. Since exercise is the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth for our bodies and brains, physical exercise, balance improvement and stress reduction techniques will be part of every class. Sessions One and Two can be taken in any order.

This slow-paced, hands-on course provides a solid foundation for the beginning computer user. Students will explore many of the typical uses of computers at home and at the workplace. Students will be able to choose whether to learn Windows XP or Vista on the computers in our classroom.

NICE AND EASY MOVEMENT
(Health and Fitness Literacy)
Whether your doctor has advised you to enroll in an on-going exercise class following a brief hospitalization or you’re seeking a moderate exercise program, our instructor will lead you through a slower-paced exercise routine that provides the benefits of improved flexibility, cardiovascular health, bone density, and muscle strength. FITNESS AND RELAXATION
(Health and Fitness Literacy)
Relax while you learn exercises that strengthen core muscles and will improve range of motion, posture, balance, and coordination while also strengthening knees, torso, shoulder, back and neck. SLOW AND EASY MOVEMENT

The gentle exercises in this new class are appropriate for people who have suffered a stroke, developed arthritis or osteoporosis and for those with neuromuscular conditions such as Parkinson’s that limit mobility. People using wheelchairs or walkers are especially invited to attend. Most activities will be done seated and in stocking feet. Please wear comfortable clothing. INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION (2 WEEK COURSE)
Start the New Year with focus and intention with this new class for novices, beginners, or anyone wanting to expand their current practice. Several styles of meditation will be explored during the course of this 2 week, 1-hour, 4 session class. WILD GOOSE QIGONG: A RELAXING PATH TOWARDS HEALTH AND FITNESS

Explore the dynamic freedom of slow-movement exercise and gentle stretching while learning about one of China’s oldest healthcare practices. Learn the entire Dayan Qigong (Wild Goose “Chi Gung”) 1st Set Form through this new 16-session series of classes. Meet twice a week on Monday and Thursday afternoons, from 1-3 p.m. for 8 weeks. Enjoy a “sweat-free workout.” Improve your strength, flexibility, and concentration. Relieves stress. Strengthens the immune system, and counteracts the effects of aging. Good for people of all ages and abilities. Instructor: Cynthia Eaton is a graduate of the Dayan Qigong Teaching Certification Program of the Wen Wu School of Martial Arts-the first qigong teaching certification program to be approved for Continuing Medical Education credits by the California State Acupuncture Board. She has been teaching Dayan Qigong in many venues in both northern and southern California for the past 10 years, including locally at Kaiser Oakland, Kaiser Union City, and the Java Gym at Zocalo’s Coffeehouse.

MY ACHING SPINE

Back and neck pain are common and often debilitating. Recommended therapies can be difficult, expensive and even frightening. And do they work? Drawing from her years of medical experience as well as her success treating her own back, Dr. Van Zino will explain the workings of the spine and what you can easily and inexpensively do to move & feel better. Included in this 2 part class will be the appropriate use of medication, surgery, and alternative therapies, as well as hands on demonstrations of helpful body movements. ARTHRITIS AQUATICS PROGRAM
Relieve arthritis pain with the use of buoyancy from water and the relaxing warmth of a heated pool. This combination creates an excellent environment for decreasing arthritis pain and stiffness. Gentle movements utilized in this program help to improve flexibility and increase joint motion, while restoring or maintaining muscle strength. Please bring a bathing suit and towel.
Aquatic Instructors are trained and certified by the Arthritis Foundation. Classes purchased through the Castro Valley Adult School (CVAS) do not have to be used sequentially, but must be used during the quarter purchased. Once the initial 8 classes are completed, students may purchase additional sessions through CVAS. Open enrollment.

This activity program now includes the following fitness opportunities: Spectrum’s Fall Prevention & Balance Exercise class on Tuesdays at 9:15 – 10:15 followed by Wild Goose Qigong practice at 10:15 – 11:30 am. and Slow & Easy Movement on Thursdays at 10:30-11:30 am. Throughout the morning you can challenge yourself by learning one or all of the following skills: sewing using a computerized sewing machine, quilting, needlepoint, crocheting, cross stitch, and Iris Folding (card making). To keep your brain sharp, learn how to solve a Sudoku puzzle and other brain teasers at our new brain fitness table. Additional events include senior health screening and health, safety & nutrition presentations. Join the group for a great sing-along every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 – 12:00. MATURE DRIVERS CLASS

Mature drivers 55 and over–– you may qualify for a reduced auto insurance premium by completing a mature drivers course. This is an eight hour class that will cover traffic laws in California, discuss defensive driving techniques that will help you compensate for mistakes of other drivers and deficiencies caused by aging. Contact your insurance agent to see if you qualify for an insurance discount. The certificate is included and is good for three years. You must be a California licensed driver.

This traditional concert band performs at least four concerts per year, and is the featured band for the Annual Rowell Ranch Parade (seated. . .not marching!) SWING BAND- BIG BAND ERA

This class is open to adults who enjoy sight reading and playing the big band sounds of the 1930’s and ‘40’s. The musical library of over 300 arrangements are for two Alto, two Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, four Trumpets, four Trombones, Piano, String Bass, Guitar and Drums.
