Register at the Castro Valley Adult and Career Education office, online, phone, fax or by mail for all classes. Students must be registered before class to insure we have the minimum number of students to make the class go. Adults under 55 may enroll in classes on a space available basis for the higher registration fee indicated in the course description.

Birding

BIRDS OF THE BAY AREA
(Health and Fitness Literacy)

Birds of the Bay AreaWinter emphasis will be on Fossil History of Birds; and Mechanisms of Flight - structures and functions and theories. Winter species identification will be both to classical, worldwide, demonstration species (aquatic to terrestrial & extinct to extant), and local birds exemplifying types of flight. Field Trips may not only be in the East Bay, but may include locations in counties outside of Alameda County (this usually means class times are doubled). Double Class Days are bag lunch days on location: 10:15 A.M. to 2:15 P.M.. Directions for field trips will be announced prior to outings. Note, there will be a mid-session hiatus of three February Fridays: 2/3, 2/10, and 2/17.

Session I focuses on changes that normally come with age and how to adapt to them. Students will master techniques for remembering names and numbers, learn about the latest research for empowered aging, and learn how to maintain brain health and independence. Activities that provide challenge, novelty and variety that work all parts of the brain, like NUMBRIX , and word recall are practiced. Proven to benefit brain health, physical exercise, balance improvement and techniques for reducing the effects of stress will be a part of every class. NOTE: Students may begin in either Memory Academy I or Memory Academy II. 10 classes

This slow-paced, hands-on course provides a solid foundation for the beginning computer user. Students will explore many of the typical uses of computers at home and in the workplace while using Windows 7 operating system.

HEART TO PAPER AND PEN, A GIFT TWICE GIVEN

Start the New Year off with thank you notes. Have fun making stationery and envelopes from recycled magazines while exploring mindfulness and authentic appreciation. We will investigate a variety of visual ideas and perspectives, culminating the class by each person writing 6 thank you letters of their own, on artful, handmade stationery. Bring a few old magazines and your own scissors. DEEPENING YOUR QIGONG EXPERIENCE
(Health, Fitness, Nutrition and Safety)

This is a rigorous once-a-week class for returning students wanting to take their practice to a new level. Come to refine your understanding of body mechanics, strength and flexibility, and intensify your experience of qi. During the first hour we will engage in all of the warm-ups, stretches, massages, and all of the Yin and Yang aspects of the 1st Set Dayan Qigong practice. During the second hour we will focus on isolated portions of the form, body mechanics, various styles of meditation, and working more intensively with qi. Prerequisite: Strong understanding of the 1st Set Wild Goose Qigong Form (Must have taken the complete 1st Set series twice.) Instructor: Cynthia Eaton is a certified instructor who has been teaching Dayan Qigong and movement classes in the SF Bay Area for the past 13 years, including locally at several Kaiser facilities in Oakland, Hayward, and Union City. 10 classes

ARTHRITIS AQUATICS PROGRAM

Relieve arthritis pain with the use of buoyancy from water and the relaxing warmth of a heated pool. This combination creates an excellent environment for decreasing arthritis pain and stiffness. Gentle movements utilized in this program help to improve flexibility and increase joint motion, while restoring or maintaining muscle strength. Please bring a bathing suit and towel.

Aquatic Instructors are trained and certified by the Arthritis Foundation. Classes purchased through the Castro Valley Adult School (CVAS) do not have to be used sequentially, but must be used during the quarter purchased. Once the initial 8 classes are completed, students may purchase additional sessions through CVAS. Open enrollment.

SENIOR NUTRITION/ACTIVITY PROGRAM FOR ACTIVE ADULTS 50+ 
(Retirement)

Start your Tuesday morning Fitness Activity with Spectrum’s Fall Prevention & Balance Exercise class (Free) at 9:00-10:00. The morning continues with students working on a project of choice. Instruction is individualized and available in the following categories: Sewing/Quilting/Applique; Needlepoint; Knitting/Crochet; and Card making/ Stamping. Handmade items include potholders, fabric purses, tote bags, needlepoint tissue box covers, rag quilts, paper pieced wall hangings, greeting/holiday cards and many easy gift project ideas. Additional events include health, safety, and nutrition presentations. A nutritional lunch (Donation: $3.25) is available with a reservation. Lunch is served at 12:00 pm.

Mature Drivers

MATURE DRIVERS CLASS
(Health and Fitness Literacy)

Mature drivers 55 and over–– you may qualify for a reduced auto insurance premium by completing a mature drivers course.  This is an eight hour class that will cover traffic laws in California, discuss defensive driving techniques that will help you compensate for mistakes of other drivers and deficiencies caused by aging.  Contact your insurance agent to see if you qualify for an insurance discount.  The certificate is included and is good for three years.  You must be a California licensed driver.

BASIC TECHNIQUES IN PIANO, ORGAN AND KEYBOARD

All levels welcome. Keep your mind sharp by learning to play piano, organ or keyboard in our unique music lab. Students work independently at learning stations that are designed for multi-level instruction. Class includes a short mini lesson, handouts, and practice stations while waiting for an individualized lesson. Computers are available for an on-line piano tutorial for all levels. Electronic keyboards with headphones allow students to practice while waiting for a private lesson with the instructor. Information for purchasing a book will be given at the first class.

COMMUNITY BAND
(The Arts)

If you love music and play an instrument, come join the Castro Valley Adult School Community Band! This traditional concert band performs at least four concerts per year, and is the featured band for the Annual Rowell Ranch Parade (seated. . .not marching!) The band performs classical music as well as marches, show tunes and pops. A great way to keep up your skills, develop new skills on a second instrument and make new friends who share your musical interests. Intermediate and advanced players welcome.

SWING BAND- BIG BAND ERA
(The Arts)
This class is for adults who are proficient in sight reading and enjoy playing the big band sounds of the 1930’s and ‘40’s. The musical library of over 300 arrangements are for two Alto, two Tenor, and Baritone Saxophones, four Trumpets, four Trombones, Piano, String Bass, Guitar and Drums. Alto’s and Tenor’s who double on Clarinet or Flute are a plus. Vocalists are also welcome to try out. The band will perform two concerts per year. Interested musicians must make an appointment with the director through the Adult School for an interview and/or audition before enrolling. (No class 1/16-2/20)
